Maintenance Tips for your Washer

Water-fill Hoses

With time, the water hoses connected to your washing machine may be prone to leaking, and in some cases, they can burst entirely. As a smart preventative measure, we recommend that you check hoses periodically for any noticeable signs of wear. In most cases, you’ll notice a small blister in the rubber of the hose, which can easily rupture. Many manufacturers suggest that these hoses are replaced every 5 years or so. Unfortunately, if ruptures occur, a significant amount of water could burst through the hose, and if hot water, it could be dangerous to anyone nearby.

Leveling Because your washing machine is so heavy, if it’s not level, you’ll likely experience strong vibrations throughout the spin cycle. This uneven balance of rocking back and forth can actually cause damage to your washing machine if you’re not careful. Your washing machine will have adjustable, front leveling legs with a lock nut. Simply adjust the leg to the proper height, and then tighten the lock nut up against the machine to stop the leg from rotating. In some cases, washers will have adjustable leveling legs in the rear as well, which can be adjusted the same way. When your machine is as close to the floor as it can get, it is less likely to vibrate. For the most part, however, washing machines come with “self-adjusting” rear legs. You set these legs by tilting the entire machine forward so that it’s resting on its front legs (with the rear legs 3 to 4 inches off the floor) and then proceed to set the machine back down. The legs should adjust automatically. Surface Cleaning Your washer will have a painted steel coating or a porcelain-coated steel cabinet. You can safely clean all surfaces with some detergent and a damp cloth. For stubborn stains on a porcelain stain, you can apply a bit of non-abrasive cleaner as well. Lint Disposal The majority of washing machines accumulate lint during the wash cycle where it proceeds to go down the drain during the drain cycle. On the other hand, if your machine is a Maytag, it will collect lint in the center tube of the agitator. This tube should be checked periodically to ensure all lint is removed and the area is clean. Other machines have a lint filter located at the top of the tub which easily slides out where it can be cleaned and reinserted.
